This is an online simulation game. You are in the cockpit of a 20  to  100 tonne mech, fighting other players for bragging rights or for the honour and glory of your clan.

http://www.microsoft.com/games/mw4mercs/sybexstrategy.asp

From this website you can download a trial version but it is only single player. The online aspect is not part of the trial version.

I would really love to see some of you guys on the field. (No disrespect intended) It’s a lot of fun but it is also educational from a warriors’ point of view.

Learn how to build and pilot a mech. Learn gunnery, targeting, tactics and much more.

This is a game for the real warrior!!

We even had a clan called the Klingon Empire {KE} though it died out unfortunatley

Cheers

At least from the Klingon perspective, I'm not sure that battling in mechs would be "a real warrior's game". I think despite the use of starships and disruptors, that one on one mech battles planetside would be seen as little more than hiding behind suits of armor.

Aside from Klingons it does seem like an interesting game.

I've been playing Battletech games since "The Cresent Hawk's Inception".   Back with my First Klingon persona, I was toying with him having a battlemech modified for space operations siting in the shuttle cargobay right next to the Targa-X earthmover.  Basically I figured he could use it to close in to a crippled starship to take the brunt of the defenses.  It made sense to me at the time, but the genre hopping didn't feel right.

I can't really say that learning Battletech is particularly educational, especially Microsoft's latest implementations which take out some of the flexibility to customize your 'mech.

Wow Klythe, you are going back.....what, almost 20 years? I have been playing battletech since the hex board game with the little plasic figures. Then we decided to build models of mechs in 5" scale (or there abouts) and playing in the back yard with tape measures. Sometimes these games could go on for a week at a time, depending how many people were playing.

Yes, I agree that the more current game types are just simply shootem up type games but MW4 Mercs allows you to tailor your mech the way you want it. My signature mech is the hauptman. I have 3 LBX20's and 2 Clan AC2's. My style of combat is "brawling" so my mech is build for brawling.3  LBX20's are short range and pack a mean punch. The 2 clan AC2's are medium to long range and dont do too much damage but they allow me to hit my target with a constant volley of shots to rock the mech so's he doesnt get a good target on me before I get in close.

Klythe, have you played MW4 Mercs?

Cheers

Dang, I'm old.  I guess 20 years is about right...  I remeber it was 3rd Ed when they started shipping plastic models in the Battletech game boxes.  Before that it was just paper cut outs with small plastic bases to stand them up on.

I think I played MW4 for a little bit, but I really don't have much time for or interest in those kinds of games anymore.  If I were to play, I'd probably be more likely to go for some MW2 with the NIAS pack...  But it would probably take me a day just to get my controls set up for that.
