Words of Battle
«

This is my first post here, and I apologize for not going through the intoductions at the Reception Hall, but I am in some what of a hurry for any help, especially before Comic-Con.
I've been working on a Star Trek project for the past few months and have hit an impass with the Klingon dictionaries I use. I'm confident most of my translations are correct, but it never hurts to ask others I guess.
That's not my main concern though...
I can not seem to find any words or phrases for "Stand Down"
I haven't been able to find anything even close, like "Cancel Orders" or "Diasable Weapon Systems"
On that note, I'm also having trouble finding a good way of saying "Prepare for Battle" or "Arm weapons"
I know that
may'
is battle, but I can find 2 close words for "prepare"
ghuH
and
ghuS
; also,
-beH
is to setup a device. I could try that for "Arm Weapons"
Which to use?
Any help would be great.

Why would one wish to stand down from battle? Battle is the natural order of things, at least to the Klingon perspective. Each conflict, no matter how large or small must have a winner and a looser. I would think that the lack of translation is more due to the concept than the actual words.

Well, after a battle has ended, the captain must need to tell his crew, ok, its time to stand down, switch off the weapons systems and lets go celebrate our victory!
We also know that klingons have several subject races they have conquered, which implies that not every battle ends in the complete destruction of the enemy - after all someone has to clean up after the warriors and they need the kuve. So Again, there must be some words the captain can use to communicate this to the crew.
A slightly more controversial example - what about the captain who is carrying vital information back to the empire and gets into trouble - he can fight and die an honourable death - or he can turn and run - even if he only runs far enough to get the information out before returning to finish off the battle.

I think, in battle, once it's over
pItlh
would suffice. Or maybe
maSuvchu'ta'
or otherwise
may' pItlh
may'
is one of the many words for battle. The word we use depends on whether it is the action of fighting (waging war, doing battle) or the thing (a skirmish, a war, a battle, a game of fistycuffs).
With these suggestions I presume that every warrior knows what to turn off/take with once the fight's over. Even when the single warrior decides enough's not enough, at least he knows he's on his own and it would be dishonorable to continue after the enemy's been defeated.
When the opposite side is too strong and regrouping is in order,
maHeD
could possibly be conveyed.
a well-placed
Qapla'
or
jay'
could convey success or failure...
pItlh = (It's) done!
maSuvchu'ta' = we are clearly done fighting (we fight clearly/perfectly accomplished/done)
may', pItlh 'e' = the battle, it's done
maHeD = we retreat
Qapla' = success
jay' = intensly (invective adverb)

Good points. I figured it was part cultural that standing down would be difficult to translate. There probably is some way to say it without showing signs of submission. Dominance seems to be very important in a Klingon conversation.
Thanks for the help, I think I may end up using
may', pItlh 'e'
. I need it to sound more like a specific command the captain barks to the crew, as apposed to a dialogue of telling the crew that they are successful.
I was thinking, weapons and shields have to be deactivated to activate the cloaking device, so it goes to figure that there would be some sort of command to deactivate the weapons and stand down. I can just imagine a Klingon instruction manual for their newly installed cloaking device, trying in vain to describe that they need to turn off their shields and weapons, and that it is not cowardice.
hmm... I'd like to see any klingon instruction manual for that matter. I wonder if their is a Klingon form of Legalese. It would most likely contain a few threats to the would-be copyright infringer's family and self.
but I digress
now correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still very new to all of this...
so
may'
is
battle
ghuH
is
to prepare for/be alerted to
and
ma-
is the prefix for
we
without a subject
so would it be
may'maghuH
= "
we prepare for battle
" <noun> + <verb prefix> + <verb>
or would there be a space between
may'
and
maghuH
any thoughts?

Also, anything you can do, you can undo with
Ha'
.
ghuHHa'
could be to unmake yourself ready for war. Though I'm not sure if this would be used.
Yes there would need to be a space between
may' maghuH

First of all, yes, there is a space between
may'
and
maghuH
Secondly may' I believe requires an extra suffix as Klingons would say "because of war we prepare" rather than "we prepare for war"
I'd say
may'vaD maghuH
Please note I am not a grammarian... I too could be terribly wrong.
may'vaD maghuH =because of battle, we prepare
