LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- More than three years after the last "Star Trek" movie crashed at the box office, the venerable sci-fi franchise is being revived by the director of the upcoming "Mission: Impossible" sequel, Daily Variety reported in its Friday edition.

The as-yet-untitled "Star Trek" feature, the 11th since 1979, is aiming for a fall 2008 release through Paramount Pictures, the Viacom Inc. unit looking to restore its box-office luster under new management, the trade paper said.

The project will be directed by J.J. Abrams, whose Tom Cruise vehicle "Mission: Impossible III" will be released by Paramount on May 5. Abrams, famed for producing the TV shows "Alias" and "Lost," will also help write and produce.

Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of "Star Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission.

The paper described "Star Trek" as Hollywood's most durable performer after James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series.

The 10th film, "Star Trek: Nemesis," bombed at the box office on its December 2002 release, earning just $43 million in North America. Last year, Viacom-owned broadcast network UPN pulled the plug on the low-rated series "Star Trek: Enterprise" following a four-season run.

OK so this would be the early days of Kirk and Spock....Let's see didn't they already do a bad prequel? Didn't they already abandon the idea of a Starfleet Academy Show? this may just rank up there with Muppet Babies.

It is frightening to even think about that......Paraborg, probably could if they set their small mind to it. Don't give them any ideas.

You have seen the script? According to the article it is as yet unwritten. I am sure that Imperial Intelligence would love to see the plans for your time travel machine. }}: \

If indeed Klingons are featured, or even referenced, I wonder which version we will get. After B&B blew continiuty into plasma during “Enterprise”, will whatever internal plot they appear not to have in mind bring us to the Klingons as seen in “Errand of Mercy”, which would put us closest to the time of Kirk and Spock’s Academy days? Unless Abrams is a diligent fan, which I think to be extremely unlikely, we are destined to get more of the Viking Bikers from Outer Space. Does anyone care to speculate?

It will be interesting to see the film materialize. Let us hope that it does not do so in a manner of accident that leaves the unfortunate operator with nothing more than a pile of writhing organic goo.

I hadn't even thought about which Klingons they would meet, but you are right on two accounts....first it would make more sense if they meet up with smoothies, and because that makes sense, paraborg will likely just ignore it and go on about whatever mores them at the moment. Who knows, they might even make a new race like they did with the Remans, then just say it was always that way. When you can declare your own revisions canon, it is much easier to cater to whims.

Ben Affleck is Captain Kirk?

"Southie" contacted us today from pre-production of Gone Baby Gone. He had some news about Ben Affleck, who is making his directorial debut with the movie. Take the news with a grain of salt as it is all unconfirmed. He wrote:

I'm doing some work at the moment - well, a week off from doing some work, rehearsals start next week - on the Boston-filmed "Gone Baby Gone" with Ben Affleck directing, and Casey Affleck starring. It's a great script - very tense stuff - I think it'll change everyone's mind about Ben's abilities in this industry.

Anyway, at a round-table catch-up this week, a few of us sparkies and grips (and briefly, Ben and Ed Harris), got together to run through some of the details for the actual shoot - which begins in little under a month.

To the news...

This isn't gospel, this isn't even confirmed....it's merely speculation on our behalf, but some pretty SOLID speculation from some solid sources...... Ben had to shoot back to L.A, briefly after our meeting, to talk to Paramount. One of the chaps here, who just worked with Ben on a movie called Man About Town, said Ben's been talking about playing Jack Ryan again in a new movie called "Red Rabbit". It's the follow-up to 'Sum of all fears'. He assumes that's what it's still about..

.. some others had heard that Ben has also been talking to Paramount about possibly playing a lead role in a new Star Trek film from J.J Abrams. Apparently Abrams is coming down to visit the set in a few weeks, to visit Michelle Monaghan, whom he directed in Mission : Impossible 3, so that might add some more fuel to the fire. If it comes off, he's apparently playing the hero. Don't know if that's Captain Kirk or some other nameless male protagonist...but that's the gist of it. So possible that Affleck's going to go onto doing a new Jack Ryan, and possibly a "Trek", after he finishes with this film.

I wouldn't be surprised if they wait till Man about Town comes out to make any decisions on that. But can I just say, Ben is the nicest guy you'll ever meet....really respectful to "everyone and anyone".....I think he's going to do a top job on "Gone"..... stay tuned.

You'll drive yourself mad if you follow indistry gossip.   I think half of these 'leaks' are trial balloons to judge reaction and the other half are practical jokes.   And if it is true...  Well, then, we get to save our time and money and not go.

Hullo, monkeytroll...    You do know that you don't need to introduce yourself each time you post.

Yeah, I think it's safe to say that the more money they make on the next Star Trek movie, the more likely they are to make a new series, or more movies...   As with any corporation, they will do what they think will get them more money, if that is more movies or another series, or maybe a series of internet flash animations if they think they can make a lot of money that way(I don't think they can make piles of money on internet cartoons... but you never know...)

I would consider it the height of good manners if you would make the effort to try to use punctuation and captialization. Cheesy Klingon Grin  You postes can be hard to read sometimes.  I wouldn't want you to be misunderstood, especially amoung Klingons, being misunderstood is a bad thing.

It's a little early to start trying to get people to go to the film.   Once it is written, filmed, edited and finally released, then we'll see what needs to be done to promote it in our little corner.  Of course Paramount has not a small amount of people who are paid to promote the film.   Hopefully it will be really good and their job will be easy and we'll already natrually be excited to see it.

Untill then, try not to get your hopes up too high.  And the film is not the only way you canshow that you still want more Star Trek to be made.  Just being active in forums and clubs sends a signal to Paramount.  The definately pay attention to the success of Star Trek cons and probably also to Trek activity at more general Sci-Fi cons.   There are other ways to give Paramount money too,  if you are worried that they aren't making any money on Trek, you could buy and read a Star Trek book, a DVD or some other Trek merchandise.

But I don't think they are hurting financially, and I think it's clear that fans are not going away despite how disapointing some of the things they have but out have been.   Admittedly that is all my opinion on it.  I can't say I've looked at their books or convention attendance reports or anything like that.

My two strips:

I ignore film rumours until the film's there.
I hope neither film nor series will reach serious stages for another year (or two)

** ehm, that would be the case, I just realised...**

It's time for the fans to indulge in some good, organised, fanfiction. Paraborg has made a real mess of the Trekscape of late.
