Satisfy an old warrior's curiosity. Which look do you prefer? Smooth or Ridged?

May I add a third choice to your poll for those who are neutral or undecided in their forehead preferences?    I don't judge Klingons on thier foreheads(unless they are painfully obviously fake because of alignment or coloration) as much as I judge by their content of character and expression of alien culture.

J'Maq,

I Actually Like Both Looks a lot... And From a "Player" Perspective I Have to Say that Fully Ridged Definitely Conveys Klingon to "Most" Folks Including Younger People... Smooth (I Assume You Mean TOS Era), Stuff Really Appeals to Older Folks Who Get Nostalgic about Classic Trek...

For Myself, TOS is a lot More Comfortable, While Ridged TNG Looks Tend to be More Impressive When Well Done...

If Your Question is in Reference to TNG Era "Smooth" Foreheads, My Answer is I am Less Impressed (From a Costuming Perspective) With "Human Looking" TNG or Later Klingons...

NOTE: I Know that the Above Comment is Not Well Received by Many more Liberal (In their Klingon Sensibilities), Fans...

I too think the Ridges are the defining physical characteristic of Klingons, however I have always liked the old Black and Gold uniforms of TOS.

I can tolerate the smooth klingons. I think I wrote somewhere inthese forums ages ago; my theory on the difference other than genetic experimentation. To me as earth, klingons are made up of many races, dark light skin, light and heavy ridges. some with no ridges. Why you dont see any smooth ridges now? maybe because they were once a superior house/ race on the planet that fell from political power,or was wiped(or almost) out and only a few remain? I bet if you go to the monestry, down in the deepest halls, there still remains old smooth head klingons.

so in answering, obviously ridged, but they are all... KLINGONS!! so tyhat makes smooth ok as well.

I never watched TOS much, and my "initiation" into Trekdom was TNG. So to me, "familiar" equals Ridged. I really like the look, and far prefer Ridged to Smooth.

But hey, that's just one warrior's opinion.  Smiley

I grew up watching TNG and only caught up on TOS later, so I too prefer the ridges.  I think they make the characters more alien looking - after all, why should we assume that all sentient life is exactly like us? (other than for the purposes of the makeup and special effects budgets).  Looking back though and watching the episodes again, the TNG episodes really seem like caricatures of Klingons, whereas in DS9 they are less cartoonish and have more depth to them (the characters not the ridges)

Kehlan,

Oh by Far, although there were some Fantastic Klingon Eps in TNG, The Politics of the Empire really Got involved and Interesting with DS9... That Said I Also Really Like some of the TOS "Klingon Eps" Such as Day of the Dove and the Trouble with Tribbles... There are some really Excellent "Klingon" Lines in those that go way beyond the Costumes and Ridgeless Foreheads...

As always, Abbott, you make a good point.  But as I mentioned I grew up with TNG and only really saw TOS later, so I can't help associating Klingon with Ridges.

As K'Allen said, "Ridged for your pleasure"  Hmm, now just why did I marry a Feddie?

Ridged ofcourse.
TOS klingons had their pro's, but their outer appearance wasn't one of them. Although, maybe the sash...

As K'Allen said, "Ridged for your pleasure"  Hmm, now just why did I marry a Feddie?
because, deep down, you're a masochist?

Many Klingons are -- what else do you think accounts for the popularity of all those pain rituals?

I love both, I grew up with TOS watching reruns lol but for me it's the ridged ones. Kehlan when TNG came on it's when we start to see how Klingon became and there history for a time Klingons were only mad beings that want nothing more then to concer the galaxy. Now they have a rich history for rituals, laws and speaking Klingon.

probably not. The ridges somehow were put across like warriors more though...

Ridges

There is more creativity and expressionism in Ridges.
Wheather they are profound or subtle, protruding or layered, it one of the first things people notice and a distinguishing characteristic of the Klingon who wears them.
