I am currently a Klingon in the process of determining which route to go with regards to joining a Klingon group in my area.

I had a brief encounter with a group in the Riverside area of Southern California nearly 10 years ago (I no longer remember their affiliation). I moved out of the country and lost contact with them. Several years ago I moved back to the States, and recently I have decided to return to the path of glory in service to the Klingon Empire. During my absence, this former group seems to have disbanded.

So, after checking several Internet sources and posting "feelers", I was contacted by two different groups in the Los Angeles area. One was KAG, the other the Ring of Fire Fleet (ROFF).

With KAG, I was contacted by Kris (John Halvorson). Currently the KAG ship in my area (IKV DARK SUN) is in dry dock. Kris has offered to mentor me in getting her back in service again.

With ROFF, I was contacted by Hagh WuS of the IKRV Hurgh Hap. They are an existing ship in my area and I have a meeting with their ship in a few weeks.

Both offers speak to the Klingon in me. With KAG, I would have the honor and challenge of bringing a ship out of dry dock to again into action. This would be a challenge, and a warrior does not shrink from a challenge. I would need to recruit new warriors (I have been contacted by a few in my area who offered to join should I start a ship), organize an infrastructure (genetics, quartermaster, etc), and generally start from scratch.

Joining the ROFF would place me in an established group of Klingons, and there is always strength in numbers. Being away from the Empire for so long, and not really having the long-term experience of participating with an active ship, their experience and support would be of great assistance in my rebirth. There are also other active ROFF ships in the San Diego area. My investigations of KAG show the DARK SUN as the only ship in the Southern California area (AFAIK).

Indecision does not suit a warrior, so I come to those of you who have enjoyed many years as active Klingons for your suggestions and comments.

I joined KAG because it was the only organization that had a ship in my state, and in my area of the state (North LA) Which surprised me because LA isn't exactly "the most modern state in the country".  My ship, the IKV Bayou Serpent, is the only ship in LA, so I do know what its like to be the "lone ship in a state".  However, I have progressed from Tactical Off, to XO, to Ship CO, to now Quadrant CO for the Cold Revenge Quadrant.  KAG is large and worldwide.

The ROFF used to be in KAG but some people apparently got into a wee-weeing contest and the ROFF left. Don't know the details, not sure I really want to either...but I know they did leave and form their own group.

All I can say is the old Klin proverb..."Trust your instincts"

I Joined K.L.A.W. 4th Fleet Somewhat Circumstantially, as they were "The" Big Show in Town (Read Florida), at the Time. Although KAG Was Around Too, K.L.A.W. had the Largest Presence at the Cons That I Was Attending, So it was Natural... (Also back then the Internet was Hardly more than a lot of BB's, so the Online Klingon Resorces were Not Well Established yet)... All in All, I was Very Glad that I Chose the Route I Chose then, and Have Made a lot of Great Friends...

I Think that Now I Would Still likely Make the Same Decison but for Different Reasons... Primarily that I like the Relatively "Strict" Role-play Environment...

I Would Suggest Looking around, and Finding that Group that Meets Whatever "Your" Criteria are... Though a lot can be Said for Joining a Club that has Members in Your Immediate Area, as this Opens Up a lot more Resources... Even So With the Online Klingon Presence out there these days there is Deffinately No Need to Rush a Choice as far as Klingon Fellowship Goes...

This is one more place where the internet has changed the face of klindom. When I joined my first Klingon club, I was pretty much limited to the two organizations that were present at the nearby convention. After I was a member of one, I heard about other clubs, but of course they were seen as just the other guys, and that was that. The opportunity to do research wasn't there, and even if you did manage to find a non-local club, they were non-local and that brought with it a whole other set of issues.

Now you can look up information, not only on large groups but also on individual chapter/ships. You can read rules and by-laws ahead of time, something that a few years ago was unheard of in most organizations (Klingon or otherwise). You have an exciting but daunting quest ahead of you, choose well.
