In Preparation for the Klingon Games I have been "Toying" with some Ideas For how to Have Ba'tlh Competitions without Having to Worry about Law Suits... (Waivers are NOT sufficient against Suitably Motivated Lawyers)... Anyway, It Occured to me that Likely One or More of the Trek Games, Possibly KHG would have One on One Combats, Possibly Even with Control over Which Weapons were Available... Unfortunately Finding a Copy of this Game has Proven Difficult... Also I Have no Idea rather it would even Run on a Modern Computer... Any Ideas?

As a Secondary thing I thought that For a Future KSG The Ship to Ship might also be Handled with a PC Game such as SF Battles, Does anyone Know any Details about The Game?

Thanks in Advance for any Input...

For betleH competitions, check out the IKV Melota website http://www.janissaries.net/ikvmelota/. They have video of theirs. The use padded weapons, similar to how the SCA does swords. Although I think the biggest thing to think about here is twofold. First everyone needs to be careful and remember that it is an athletic competition and not a war, so try not to actually kill your fellow klin. Second, knowing that this is your fellow klin, be honorable and don't even bring your lawyer's phopne number to the event with you. Just becausethe world has gon lawsuit crazy, doesn't mean that those are the only way to settle disputes. Apes don't kill other apes, and really Klingons shuldn't sue other Klingons

In a Perfect World I would agree, but Since You Never Know what May Happen (Or Who might Show Up), We have to be VERY Careful... SCA Swords are Made of Rattan a Very Hard Wood, and Wraped in Duct tape... (Which is why their Armour Rules are SOoo Stringent... There are Other Options Such as the Weapons used by LARP organizations like AMPTGARD, Which are made of Thin Flexible Graphite Rods Wraped in Foam... There are Some Really Great Companies out there Making Fantasy Weapons in this Style, but Getting them to Make Klingon Weapons has been Unsuccessful to date... (And Expensive)... Eventually we may do that, but for Now we are Looking for "Other" Options...

I have seen betleHmey made of PVC pipe wrapped in foam. The appearance left something to be desired, and they were very light weight, but they would be hard to seriously injure someone with. I will see what I can find out this weekend, as I think the guy who made them will be at the paintball game I am going to.

Sounds Interesting... I Have seen some "Questionable" Attempts at tlhIngan 'etlhmey (Klingon Swords), Style Boffers in the Past... None of which were impressive enough to make me want to Pursue that Option... But like I said there are a Few Companies out there Doing some interesting things in :Other" Genre' so perhaps By The Next KSG... Regardless I would Appreciate Any Info You Get from your Inquieries...

Having actually compeated in the bat'letH Tourney hosted by the IKV Melota, its very well organized.  Headgear is manditory in all but d'k'tagh competition. Weapons are padded and made of wood.  PVC will break too easily that is why they don't use that media. They have 3 judges in the ring at all times. Like I said earlier, it is highly organized and runs smoothly.  We do have to sign a waiver to compete.

Its fun, and yes you can get hurt, but that can happen at work as well. The combatants of this event have been doing it so long that they know nobody is going to sue anybody.  However, checking w/ a lawyer type person might be the way to go in your case.  Or, if somebody sues...just kill them!!!

...<Taking Notes>..."If Sombody Sues Just Kill Th..." Hey Wait! The Whole Point of this is to Avoid Civil Action...<Smirk>...

Anyway, Having a Physical Competition is Certainly Desireous... But For Our Very First KSG I am a little Gun...er...batlh Shy... We Do Not Know who is Planning on Attending after all, so the Potential for "Unkown" Quantities is very Real... We Do Not Have the Luxury of Knowing who the Players will be and rather they can be Trusted or not...

As far as the Weaponry goes, Wood will always be out of the Question (As Would PVC), if we Make these or Have them Made in the Future they will almost certainly be the Graphite Core Weapons Popular in LARPs... Because they are Strong and Flexible and realitively Small in Size, So that Even with the Minimum 2" Foam all around they are not "That" Bulky...

If your looking for a Klingon Fight simulator,  there is only one that I know of.  "Klingon Academy"  This flight sim puts you in full control of over fifty availabe ships.  Good hunting!  Qapla

Yes, this was the most likely candidate... as it was we ended up just doing a Table Top Fleet Battles Variant...

I head a local chapter of a boffer organization, and for our in-house specialty events, we're actually working on combat-safe boffer-ish sci-fi weapons (klingon, fremen, vulcan, what-have-you), and I think i have an idea on how to make a decent looking boffer meqleH or betleH safe, but it'll need at least a month's worth of testing. I'll drop my results in the appropriate forum.

Kash,

Very interesting indeed. I would be curious to know more once you have had a chance to test some ideas out.

Circumstantially, this past year at Feast (Daytona Beach), the weapons master of the Hup Hoch built some very nice "Boffer-style" batlhmey, and they hosted the first batlh tourney as part of this years 'Warrior Contest'...

It was fairly successful as an event, and they did a good job of moderating it for saftey. (Though eye protection could have been better addressed)...

Regardless, I am also still very interested in what might be done with a computer simulation. This would be a great "Equalizer" for Human "Warriors" playing at being Klingon who may not be physically able to compete in a full contact event. Ultimately I'd love to have variations of both.

Since my original posting of this question, I have heard about the new MMORPG set in the Star Trek Universe. There could be some options there as well...
