thlInagn Hol - an opinion
:
...there are still several groups outside the KLI that promote the language and try to help people learn it.
What groups are these?
I know of only three:
- The KIDC's
Language Discussion mailing list
,
-
Klingonska Akademien
, and
- qeSan's not-always-canon
tlhIngan Qumem
(unfortunately most of the site is down as of this writing).
Anyone knowing of others is asked to add them to the list.

Although it is woefully out-of-date (no new words added for a while now), the intent of this site is to help you understand Klingon {tlhIngan Hol} sentences/utterances but also may be used to cast English sentences to {tlhIngan Hol}.
The translation is done word-for-word and all options for a word are given, so you will not get a ready-made translation.

The former Klingon Wikipedia (
http://klingon.wikia.com/wiki/ghItlh%27a%27
) should also be mentioned along with the afore mentioned (former) Wiktionary (
http://mughom.wikia.com/wiki/tlhIngan_Hol_mu%27ghom:ghItlh%27a%27
). They are now maintained independent of the Wikimedia Foundation, however the Wikipedia logo still contains the Klingon "r" in the top right area.

The tlhIngan Hol community is a bit more active than I thought!
And the most active contributors in klingon.wikia are native Dutch speakers, I might be able to actually meet some of these folks..
The first time I found this website I thought it was as dead as most Klingon-related websites are, but there is recent activity on this wikia

Yeah, the administrator is a German named Lieven, who I believe is the same person as Quvar.
Can you think of any more resources?

Lieven Litaer is a Flemish Belgian guy living in Germany, I have seen footage of him instructing a class in Klingon. He does not update his own website.

Wow... that guy must know like five languages! Dutch, German, Klingon, maybe a little Spanish... He seems nice enough. The only contact I have with him was help with the
gh
letter (I still think I'm overdoing it), although he tired of that after four exchanges. He seems nice enough. He has a website? I was not aware. Could you include a link?

quvar also speaks Spanish indeed:
http://www.klingons.org/levinius/espanol/espanol.html
About the
gh
: I had some discussion on this forum about the tlhIngan
H
and
gh
and the Dutch, Southern Dutch and Flemish pronunciation of the Dutch g
Being Flemish, quvar probably does not pronounce the Flemish/Dutch g as a tlhIngan
H
but at least he will know about the difference between the languages.
If you have listened to Conversational Klingon and Power Klingon you should be able to recognize the differences between
H
,
gh
and
r
.
I mention the
r
because at least to my ears the
gh
is a sound between the
H
and the
r
And the pronunciation of the
D
can be confusing as well, because it occasionally resembles the
r
, at least in CK and PK, the only canonical
tlhIngan Hol
audio resources apart from the movies.

Cool. He says he speaks very little Spanish, but that is better than I. If you put an article in front of me in Spanish, I will be able to get the gist of what it is concerned with. I ceased my study of Spanish to pursue Klingon (which I will probably follow with Latin).
I have seen Quvar pronounce the
gh
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRVa72sHdeQ
), and I have heard it pronounced on the KLI's site. In both instances, it mostly sounds like a regular English
h
or indistinguishable from the Klingon
H
to me. It has been described as an over done
H
, and very much like the French
r
. Basically, I make an intense gargling sound. I hate pronouncing the letter because I'm sure that I'm doing it incorrectly, and I have problems when it is near an
H
. The
r
is rolled like in Spanish, right? That's what I've been doing. My order for
Power Klingon
and
Conversational Klingon
fell through, so I will need to try again later.
To keep this on topic, here's another site:
http://www.khemorex-klinzhai.de/e/Hol/mix/curses.html
Voragh's notes on Klingon cursing. Only about 13 or so of these words are in canon, but it helps with context so you're vulgarity will be neat and professional

I would also suggest the site I helped build for the Klingon Assault Group's tlhIngan Hol 'ampaS (Klingon Language Academy):
http://hol.kag.org
It has a dictionary, some grammar guides, games (including Klingon boggle), pIqaD converter, streaming media, flashcards and more.

Almost any combination of consonant vowel consonant means something which makes Klingon Boggle quite easy

It's not as easy as you make it sound. While 3 letter words are easy to find, they don't really score much (words others find aren't scored). The challenge is the find longer words or words with prefixes/suffixes.
