What terrian music would compliement klingon music.
I think at present, Motorhead, Soil.
I know you have your pub songs of glory, but what about everyday music?

OH if anyone is interested, I have got a band of very talented musicians that are going to do a full and modern version of the Klingon imperial theme.
I will let you know when the first few versions are recorded.
I wanted to use the new version for my battle fleet or intorduction scenes, and use motorhead(evolution) for closing scenes.
I would be interested to know what types of songs maybe deemed Klingon in nature.

One piece I recommend you "audition" for your soundtrack is "The Bog" by BiGod20. It is an industrial dance song that struck me as vaguely Klingon in it's theme, music, and lyrics. There are several cuts/remixes out there, and as far as I know all are long out of production. I think that an accoustic version would make a good march or battle prequel, or perhaps even a folksong, depending on how the rhythms are scored.

If you cannot find a copy and would like to hear more, contact me. I have a handful of extras.

I and members of my house always consider the band Manowar to be warrior (if not Klingon) based metal. Some specific songs are very good matches for Klingon thoughts and ideas. I have even used some of the quieter stuff in ceremonies. I am also seeing a great deal of paralels with Irish/celtic folk music and Klingon music.

Of late I have been working at adding music into ceremonies we do, because it gives the speaker and the audience a break from one or two of us droning on and on. I used a ver eclectic mix. For the Funeral I did last year, I made a CD which included two Egyptian folk/dance Instumentals, One whole Manowar balad and one clip of a very long Manowar Instrumental. A Scottish military fanfare of trumpets, Backround music from the movie Gladiator, a russian chant (that actually came from a Billy Joel album) The Klingon Battle (From ST1) and a Welsh military march.

I selected the music based on three things: First I wanted it to be a wide spectrum to show that Klingons indeed have such music. Second about half of the music was things that my deceased friend listened to on his own. Third I wanted the Marshal/Military feel to kep everybody in the Klingon role playing attitude.

Of all the places to find russian music, I would not have thought of Billy Joel.

What Billy Joel album did you find the russianchant on?

There are also a Smattering of Klingon Filk Bands out there... I Have a C.D. of a More or Less Local (To Florida At Least), Group called "Warband" that Do Mostly Rock 'N Roll Covers, but with Strictly Klingon Oriented Lyrics... (Not In Klingon, But Klingon Inspired)... The Album I Have is Titled K'filk, But I have No Idea How Available it is...

I Also Like Lai Bach for A lot of their Less Disco Sounding Industrial Music...

I've heard of Warband, but I didn't know they had a CD. I've heard some of thier stuff online, but usually the sound quality is bad.  I get the feeling that the MP3's were bootlegs from a live performance, and not recorded with good equipment.

The Russian chant is very quick, only a few seconds long and is the opening track to the Album Billy Joel did in live in Russia.  The song/chant is called Odoya. I have no idea what it means, but it sets theceremonial tone quite well.

Unfortunately I Think that the CD for Warband was Itself Recorded Live, So Any Reproductions are likely to be even more Crackle filled... But they Do Have a Few Very Listenable Tunes on the Album...

I Have also Heard some Kewl Japanese Drumming (Koto?), that Could Go Along way towards Sounding Klingon...

Two other Terran works that I believe would compliment Klingon music that haven't been mentioned elsewhere are:

The song "Marco Polo" from Loreena McKennitt's CD "Book of Secrets" is a beautiful instrumental piece weaving increasingly complex harmonies and percussive rhythms  around a Sufi melody. It could be described as "sultry and serpentine".

"Mars On River Drina" by Laibach is a techno-tinged instrumental and choral piece along the lines of Basil Poledouris's action scores ("Battle of the Mountain" from the otherwise exorable movie "Conan the Barbarian" comes to mind.)

Unfortunately the only downloads I could find to link to are clips, and do an injustice to both pieces.

SoplaHtaHwI',

Hey I hear you... And Agree Strongly!

Kesvirit,

I Really Enjoy Loreena McKennitt Very Much... It is Generally Very Reflective... Good Meditation Music...

And Laibach... Well Laibach is of Course an Institution, There are a lot of "Dramatic" Pieces to be Found on the Mackbeth Album as Well as on Opus Day...

A Google search has revealed the group Kosmic Horror, a rather generic sounding goth/metal group whose lyrics are in tlhIngan Hol. Three different versions of their song "Duj tIvoq taH"*, including a karaoke version, are available for free download.

Abbot, I have included both on the most recent KSG suggestion CD.

That's what you get when musicians try to write in languages they aren't fluent it...  What he said sounds to me more like "Trust continuey instincts"...   Does this mean Trust any instinct that endures?

I believe they were going for DujlIj tIvoqtaH  But I don't know how that would affect the music of the song with the extra syllable, and only two words...   My guess is probably not that much that it couldn't have been translated better....

qoSagh,

The Band Had Turned Up in an Off Board Discussion with another Member, where I Had Asked if they were familiar with it... They Found the Link for the Sample D/L... But You Say that You Have the Whole Album? Is it All In The Hol? The Web site Implies a Theme running through the Songs, as though it were the Story of the Guy Who has Been Spirited off to Fight alongside the Klingons... And Possibly something of His Manifesto? Can You Confirm any of that?

So This Post has Nothing to Do With the Kosmic Horror CD, but I Wanted to Note that The Ranking Ambassador of K.L.A.W. 4th Fleet (Kita zanta-Juriss), Just Took the Honor of Being 2005's Miss Klingon Empire at Dragon Con... Her Talent was a Spirited and Very Moving Rendition of the Oath of Empire (Per FASA), Sung to Carl Orff's Carmina Burana... We Have a Poor Copy of this Performance Digitaly Recorded on a Hand Held Camera, but Hope to get the Lass into a Studio And Get this Thing Recorded Properly For Klingon Distribution... It really was a Worthy Effort...

Duj tIvoqtaH is actually correct. You can skip the -lIj as instincts have to be yours anyway.
I can't remember where, but that phrase was even mentioned as a Klingon proverb in an official source (official = approved by Marc Okrand).

The lyrics should be 100% correct tlhIngan Hol.
qumpe (the man behind Kosmic Horror) joined a qepHom to get his lyrics fixed.
Klenginem/Quvar was the one who helped him with that and he was one of the KLI BG's for a while, so he should know ;-)

Both are members of Khemorex Klinzhai , that's where I know them from.

Heheh.  Considering we are all working from incomplete sources, even the KLI would admit that what is official still might not be correct to a Klingon! Cheesy Klingon Grin
But I stand suitably chastised.

As has been said before, much of what is considered Klingon here in fandom is from sources other than (canon) Klingon. It is hard to quantify, but one will know it when one hears it. The way it stirs the blood when you listen, the way it helps focus the emotion in battle, the way it just sort of fits its purpose.

Just two things:

1) There is a klingon-related metal rock band called STOKOVOR (the klingon version of "Walhalla", it seems to be), which are probably from Portland.
2) There is a song in tlhIngan Hol  which goes something like that: roj ´oH rojqoq ´e´ "The so-called peace"

And one question: Does anybody knows something about "klingon opera" ?, I have just heard of it

Stovokor and Rojqoq are an interesting choice of examples. Of everything I’ve heard described as Klingon, the two could not be farther apart.

Stovokor. Feh. Generic, mediocre death metal with a Klingon schtick. Incense would have to be imported from outside the Empire to drown out the stench of testotargh. The warmed-over space-biker stereotype was trite fifteen years ago and gives Klindom a bad name.

Excuse me while I go capture that rampaging peeve.

Rojqoq: ‘So-Called Peace’ is quite clever in using the tlhIngan Hol to emphasize different aspects of a hopelessly ridiculous peace agreement, as in “Just who do we think we’re fooling here?” It is posted with an English translation and available as an mp3 download.

Musician/engineer Bill Sethares experiments with musical scale divisions, harmonics, and what I guess you’d call experimental mathematics to produce pieces that actually sound plausibly non-Human alien, as opposed to taking common metal or electronica and slapping a Klingon bumper sticker on it. As such, some of his music may sound a bit “off”. Read his short-and-simple page on speculative exomusicality. He has a page of downloads here. I recommend them to those who want to explore past the mundane and formulaic. Bill, if you ever come across this, I would really like to hear are more acoustic compositions!

As for Klingon opera, it is often referred to, but I have yet to come across an example or description. The subject is wide open for anyone with an interest in music and a good imagination.  Anyone who wants to take a stab at it, please start a new thread for it.

In the vast compilation of songs several members of my club have gathered, one song is jokingly called a  Klingon Opera.
It is supposed to be sung multi-voiced and everyone is to choose their own melody.

I currently do not have the time (about to go to the job...) to find its title/lyrics, but I will work on this in the quiet times at work 8-)

The Boran (Spelling?) drum is a good noise that would probably go with Klingon Themed music, not only is it reasnobly bass heavy its tone alters. I think it is used in Clannad music quite allot although they themselves couldn't be less Klingon if they tried. As for terran Music that would sound klingonesque i would suggest,

Slam - Biohazard
Some of the music from braveheart could work well
Look to your orb for the warning - Monster magnet
Dali - Martin grech.

There are a few more but i cant think of them off the top of my head
