Hi, I am doing a paper on the Klingon aspect of Trekies. Please give me your views as to how this relates to everyday life, and why you do what you do. Ias it seen as a cult or just plain fun? Thanks

I for one would say that this is a fun passtime, a hobby, albeit an intense one. As for every day life, well I think that Klingons provide a release from normalcy which can be a stress reliever. I also think that Klingons, which in general are fairly regimented, can provide order as a form or release from a disorderly life.
Having a fleet of RPG (Role Playing Game) ships is no different that having a Fantasy Baseball or Football team. Both are subject to lots of rules, yet still maintain fun.

The group I am in, the
IKV T'mar
is really at least as much of a community service organization as a sci-fi fan club. We volunteer and/or participate in charity walks, fund raisers and auctions, blood donations, creating quilts and christmast stocks for the needy, and that is just in the few months since I signed up! Last weekend we did a walk-a-thon for the American Heart society and on Halloween we are going to do a safe candy hand out event at the mall.
Personally, I have to disagree with the idea that the Klingon this is an aspect of Trekkies. A lot of the people who are most heavily into Klingons aren't really big fans of the show... And your basic trekkies, don't get the Klingon thang at all...

I must concur with Klythe. There is no correlation between Klingdom and Trekies. Our Social Club is based in Central Florida and our activities are social/community based as well (American Heart Walk, Rite of Ascension for Make A Wish Foundation, Walk to Cure Diabetes, Blood Drives, Adopt A Road, to name a few). To be perfectly honest, even the local Feddie clubs operate more akin to a social/community club than the "Trekies" concept. While I know Trekies exist, they are more the exception than the rule.

I Guess it is an Old Question... And the Very Term Fan (Short for Fanatic), Implies Levels of that Cult-like Image...
But, Like Most Images, It is not really a Clear representation of the Diversity of the Individuals Involved...
Community Service is By Far the Most Common Element to Most Trek Organizations that I have Seen, or Interacted with... That having Been said, the People Involved are at the Heart of any Social Groups Definition of itself... And There is Massive Differences in the Way that Different Clubs are Run...
For Myself I "Play at Being a Klingon" as a Hobby, As a Social Outlet, and to some degree as an Artistic Expression... I Am Neutral to Terms Like Trekkie or Trekkor, For Some That Lends them a Sense of Identity... I Find Myself More Often Referring to Myself as a Klingon Fan Rather than as a Trek Fan Per se'... (Though I Do Enjoy Many Aspects of Trek Overall)...
As to My Everyday Life... Well... I THink that there are Values Such as Honor, Integrity, Loyalty and Personal Courage Which I Find to Be Important to Everyday Existence, and Being able to Feel Good about my Actions and Choices, so in that way My Choice of Hobby Is better Reflected by my Everyday Values than the Otherway Around... I Do Not Live and Breathe Klingon Every Waking Moment, But Many Of My Friends are Fellow Adventurers in Klindom, and I Deffinately Enjoy Discussing Aspects of the Warriors Way regardless of rather I am in A Funny Costume And Wearing a Piece Of Latex Plastic on My Head... So it is Not Completely Separate From Other Aspects of My Life...

The initial post is over six months old, and drdray has yet to return to give a status report. Why not email him through his Member Profile and ask him? I, too, would like to know...
