(Edit -- This thread continues from Honor Sashes in the General Discussions section.)

The best I have seen up close and personal was by a friend who took gold ribbon and wove it together, then sewed the weaving in place. Of the two I have, the one I wear most often is the "new" style which I made out of washers held together with wire, then laced with red ribbon. The closest that I have to a TOS sash, is one that was a metalic gold tubular cloth just cut to length and sewn at the ends. I have found that that one does not hold it's shape well. Also I normally wear a tank top of the same material so to make the sash stand out I wear the new style.

Metalic gold ribbon is very easy to find, either in cloth which is softer but holds it's shape less or paper which is more rigid but less durrable. Of course I have the benefit of a wife who manages an arts & crafts store so I find out about new products pretty quickly. I have also found that the best time to buy metalics is just before Christmas, as there seems to be alot more avalible. The ribbon can also be frayed at the loose ends so that it has a more fringed look to it.

Another place to check for Gold Ribbon is Wally-World.  I've seen the ribbon in there just last week (mid-April 2004), 2 1/2 inches wide by 15 feet, and less than $3.00 (on sale/clearance).

I hate to promote W-W, but check them out before you spend alot of $$$ for your craft items (as I have kicked myself several times) because they usually have a cheaper price than some of the major craft stores.

Whiting and Davis, a company out of NY, produces chain mail and stuff that is used in many movies.

They have some really cool metal mesh fabric and metal stuff that Klingons would love. Only problem is they do not do retail (I think).

Their aluminum or brass mesh looks like it would make a great sash.

That could be good, too. There was a post a LOOOOONG time back about using metal mesh, someone had found a source for the original mesh used in one of the movies.......I imagine there's not much chance of finding that post now. With my chain maille experience, I had offered to help them join the pieces of it together to the desired shape.

I've had good experience making them entirely from rings (1300+!) , first to friends, and then to quite a few people looking for costume props in other states. I haven't had a complaint yet, anyway!! Smiley

The ways of making a sash are probably as varied as the props each individual Klingon uses for their costumes! That's what is cool, everyone has their own way of showing their style while keeping with the look of their favorite movie.

I printed out that page cocerning the sash also a breakdown of other stuff as wel,let me look for it and I'll have to snail mail a copy,to you.I do have the material for the TNG sash the aluminum mesh is usually found by searching for "metal mesh". The other parts are leather covered by a butcher's mesh,as in the protective aprons you see these sparingly on Ebay as well.
The only problem I have is who can sew my metal items to leather?

You may have seen her website, but if you haven't, google "K'Put's Closet".  Her instruction for sewing the mesh for the uniform gorget piece are great.  You may have thought of hand sewing the mesh under-links on the edge of your mesh material/pattern) using invisible fishing line.   For the leather, in the least, you will need a spacer set wheel and punch to evenly make the holes along the edge of the leather to stitch the links to it with the fishing line. I am blessed with having a Tandy Leather store in my town, so check out their webiste (tandyleather.com) to see if there's one near you (among many other online leathercraft stores.) Qapla'!
