A Difficult Question

Goshers, what a question. One on which I could go on and on if not forcibly stopped. It was a tough call, but my winner is Grilka by a hair. I've only seen her in one episode ("House of Quark"), but I have to admire her resourcefulness, quick thinking, and determination. In what was indeed a dismal time in history for Klingon women she grabbed the bull by the b- uh, horns and made the best of a very bad situation, ultimately prevailing against a very stacked deck. She never reacted with panic or cruelty but kept her head and her dignity while sticking to both her guns and her own sense of values. She was also pretty considerate towards her "victim", more so than I would have been. Would that I could do as well.

Valkris is a close second, though I base this on the novelization of ST3 and not the movie (which I think for the purposes of this poll would invalidate her as my choice for #1 - how many people here have read the book?). In the film the character only has a few lines and a few seconds of screen time, and all the actress has to do is stand there and look good. The book gives her more characterization, delving more into her motives and her background. She is trying to salvage her family's honor and find some meaning to her own life, and finally finds peace in her own death. We should all be so fortunate.

Also, for what it's worth, in the book she was not Kruge's mate - they had never met in person but there's more going on. He knew her by reputation for a variety of reasons, regretted not ever having met her, and regrets that now he will never have the chance. His "That is most unfortunate" line has several different layers of meaning. I took it as a sort of mourning of missed and lost opportunities. She addresses him as "My love" out of love and gratitude, for his destruction of the ship she hired tied up a lot of loose ends and brought her resolution and vindication. I liked the book a lot better than the movie - it got into a lot of character motivation and subplots that the film didn't and gave the whole thing a lot more depth. I don't know if these parts were cut from the film or added by the author, but I suspect the latter.

Sound Off!

People are voting but not posting the reasons behind their preferences. Come on, folks, tell us why! What kind of Klingon makes an assertion without being willing and able to back it up?

Perhaps Lady K'Zin would like to lead by example. Or does her Ambassadorial status require her to remain neutral on such pressing matters? Wink

I selected K'Ehleyr as my favorite, with Azetbur a very close second. I really took a strong liking to K'Ehleyr when I first saw that scene where she was in her quarters on the Enterprise, and in her frustration, slammed her fist into the glass table and smashed it... I don't know how many times I've felt like doing something similar myself when I was angry or frustrated; but restrained myself, sometimes to my chagrin... I guess it was my "inner Klingon" wanting to get out and truly express itself -- that or the fact that I was born in the Year of the Dragon! Wink

I also like Azetbur for probably very obvious reasons; she was a strong Klingon woman who took charge in a very difficult time and came out on top of everything. She became a natural leader and a diplomat as well... My kind of lady!

I thought I had posted my reasons... Oh well. I like Mara, and I explained much of why in the favourite of the three heroes poll.

I thought the whole "looking for Parmach" was really cheezy. That Grilka would be fooled so easily by Quark's bad acting.

Valkris was a strong contender. Loyal and yet mysterious. Torres as an intellegent and strong person would be, if she didn't hate all things klingon up until the last few episodes... Keylher? She was a bit smug for my tastes. To sassy, but without anthing to back herself up with...

Vixis and Azetbur didn't have enough screen time to reveal any sort of personality. Vixis was eyecandy, and Azetbur was a plot device. Not enough time to decide to like them or not... I must say, i didn't particularly care for the visual design of the Azetbur character, but I feel a bit the same with Mara, only Mara somehow wound up with personality along the way.

I think that just leaves the Sisters... Yeah, Be'etor is very attractive more than Vixis in my opinion, really they are both scoundrels and collaborators, so it is best to just leave them...

I agree, tough call!
I voted for Grilka, because to me, she demonstrated three great qualities of being Klingon: honor, intelligence, and fierceness.
I considered K'ehleyr, but she seemed a bit too snotty, and lacked that fire in her eyes seen in great Warriors.
Azetbur was honorable and intelligent...though she lacked that same fierceness.
The Duras sisters were dishonorable. Enough said, heh.
Mara, well it's been too long since I've seen that TOS ep, so unfortunately, I don't remember much about her character other than she was had an angry attitude.

I nearly voted for Torres, but like another warrior mentioned, I didn't care for the way she disliked all things Klingon.....which brings me to the female I think I would have voted for over Grilka...and that would have been the "pure" Klingon half of Torres who was created in that early Voyager ep by the Videans -(sp?). She definately had that Warrior Fierceness, very honorable, and seemed to have a good head on her shoulders. Too bad they had to recombine her DNA...I liked her character.

Hmm...I may still have voted for Grillka though...

I like K'Ehleyr cause of her humor, shown at the weirdest times. What a pitty that her character was only shown twice.

My vote was for K'Ehleyr because I liked her attitude and she was a Klingon-babe (hey, I'm only a guy Smiley ).  But it was mostly her attitude and feistiness that put her over the top.

This Was Tough for Me Because I Really Like Azetbur... But I Had to Vote K'ehleyr On Personality... (Of Course With the Exception of Perhaps B'lana there has been little Effort to Create a Complicated Female Klingon Character)... But I Liked that K'ehleyr was able to easily Combine her Human and Klingon Traits and Use Both to her advantage rather than Endlessly Waring within herself over her potentially Questionable lineage... I voted Azetbur because after her father died she did not stray from her father's cause: safeguard the future of the empire. Not even a rebellion blew her from her path.

it almost came down to a coin toss between K'ehleyr and Torres, but i decided to go with Torres foe the fact that im currently a quater the way through the second season of STV, that and the fact that she gave up a nice comfortable life with starfleet to fight for her beliefs with the maquis.

Azetbur--Chancellor and Daughter of Gorkon. Regal, wise, beautiful, strong, and fiercely proud of her
heritage. She is grand indeed.

Martoq was married to Lady Sirella.   She has been added to a misc. category as well as Dr. Kurak, the half-romulad child Ba'el, Vekma of the IKV Pagh (who fancied Riker), and any others not mentioned.

Chancellor Azetbur gets my vote hands down.  She shows her Klingon strength with dignity, class and honor.  She is the Klingon woman I admire most.  Now, if only we could get a lady like her to be President of the United States!

*sigh*  Her name was Ba'el, she's listed under misc.    You like green blood in you bloodwine?   Disgusting.  Also, you and Worf both could stand to take a lesson from Ernest and Juilo Gallo, serve no wine before it is time.  Think about it man, you'd have Romulan in-laws.

Now Dr. Kurak, is so hot her brains are sexy too.

Though I have to go with Abbot that Kehlyr is a much better half-Klingon than Be'lanna Torres.   Kehlyr was comfortable with both her hyoomin and her Klingon sides.   I'm tempted to pull these two out along with Ba'el, and add in maybe Alexander, Toral and any other half-Klingons I can think of and start a new poll for them.   What do you think, should I?

It looks like my original post was eaten by then hungry spiderbots after the first board crashed.   My vote was and is still for Mara.  Of the characters of the list she was the only one I am aware of who understood enough about being Klingon to explain it to the hyoomins.

The Duras Sisters just cracked me up. They still do, and I'm still a tad miffed they had to go and blow them up. Angry

Grilka comes in a close second (or would that be third?  Cheesy)

I have to vote for Kehleyr.  I love her attitude, her strength and her humour.   She is the one who inspired me to become Klingon almost ten years ago.
