In the last few months I've become interested in languages.  I stumbled across Klingon again after forgetting it existed, and then I saw the dictionary in bookstors for the first time in years recently.  I bought the dictionary tonight, but I haven't even opened it up yet.  I'm looking for the best way to learn the language.  I'll admit I'm kind of scared to go to the KLI website again after reading about it having spammers/viruses here.  Other than that if it helps recommend an efficient learning path I'd like to tackle Klingon to learn the language and to build up my language skills before going after Spanish and maybe Russian later (two languages I've studied in the past;  I remember a good number of basic nouns in Spanish if I see them written, but I am lost on verbs and terrified of conjugation;  Russian is pretty much gone except for a handful of words).  Basically I thought Klingon would be tough enough to get me whipped into shape, but has a limited enough vocabulary that I could reach some level of proficiency in a relatively short time.

The best way to learn any language would be to spend time among the natives while having a dictionary and grammar book at hand. If being among native speakers is not really an option you might consider watching their movies or tv shows subtitled in the language you know. In the Klingon case even the last option is not getting you very far, but there are a few short movies with spoken Klingon where the written Klingon and Federation Standard (English) translation are provided. Watching and studying these might inspire you.

In the mean time you might want to construct anything you would like to say in Klingon and post it here. There are always a few of us who are willing to give you a discommendation , that is to say we will love to tell you what you did wrong (provided that you did)  Cheesy

I've found Conversational Klingon and Power Klingon extremely helpful.  I believe they're both part of the Klingon language suite on iTunes.
Apart from that, Klingonska Akademien is a great resource.

I recommend you start by listening to CK and PK, and then use the dictionary and Klingonska Akademien to read Klingon texts (such as Qo'noS QonoS or texts that you find here).  Then, start writing your own, and submmit them herr for the grammarian's discommendation Wink

The pronunciation for the phrases given in the end of the dictionary shows how to pronounce the phrases.  If I use this to deduce the proper pronounciation of the capitalized letters will I be pronouncing the capitlalized letters correctly in all or most cases?  Whenever I try to use the description of how to make the sounds for the capitalized letters given in the front of the dictionary I always end up just making a growling sound.

Is it best to try to learn some word roots before even attempting to learn about the suffixes?  I know the suffixes come first in the dictionary, but after reading a bit of it it seems like learning some root words first might be more effective.

If I download something from iTunes is there anyway to play it on my computer or do I need an iPod?

I don't know; that's probably a matter of personal preference.  Personally, I got the affixes and grammar, first, so that I could deconstruct sentences and construct "pseudo-Klingon" ones of my own; it helped me get "the feel" of the language.
Actually, I still don't know a whole lot of root words!

You should be able to listen to audiobooks on your PC, or burn them to a CD if you prefer.  The Klingon Language Suite is only for the iPhone, though, I think.
iTunes has both The Klingon Way and Conversational Klingon as audiobooks.  I really recommend Conversational Klingon, and hope they get Power Klingon soon!
