Star Fleet Universe Klingons

Hi!
It's been a while since I posted - long enough to lose my old password as Nerroth - but how and ever...
I was wondering how many, if any, of you have read the representation of the Empire in the
http:\\www.starfleetgames.com|Star Fleet Universe
, as portrayed in GURPS and D20 Klingons?
Its take on the history of Klinshai (not Qo'nos in that universe), the rise of Kahless, the coming of the Old Kings, the wars against the Kzinti, Lyrans, Federation, Tholians etc, the details on the political, economic and military scructure of the Empire et al...
If not, it's an interesting view on the TOS-era Empire.
If so, do you find much there that offers relevance to the Empire of the Paramountiverse? (I find the SFU take on the Exodus from Vulcan in the age of Surak, as portrayed in GURPS/D20 Romulans, as a fascinating one... if you'll pardon the pun)

Send a Private Message to me and/or Kesvirit and we will see about reseting your password.
I used to play SFB when I was a teenager... It irritated me greatly that the Klingons didn't have Photon torpedoes in that game, so I struggles for months trying to come up with balanced Disruptor/Photon 'variants' for the Klinogn fleet.
I stopped playing(because I mode away from anyone who wanted to play) before the orginal Prime Directive was released. I saw it in bookstores later, but since I had no one to play it with I decided I'd have to save the moeny for other things. I wish I had gotten it. It would be good to know what I missed. Many I should see if I can still find a copy...
My view of Klingons is influenced as much(hopefully more) by the early fandom as it is by the NeoTrek TV shows and movies(TNG, DS9, VOY, etc). I have mentioned te Old Kings before, as a possible third interpretation of what others have called the Kharsids or the Hur'q. Of course all three are different, and only one can be true at a time... But it does offer an interesting persoective on that critical time in Klingon History.
We were about to start a forum RP(creative writting, no game system rules or dice) set in the aftermath of the fall of the old Kings/kharsid/Hur'q, when things at work started getting busy and I got swamped. Would you be interested in that if we got that going again?

Hi!
Klythe, if you are looking to get back into the wargaming side of the Star Fleet Universe, probably better to start with the new Federation Commander (I have a thread about it over at the gaming section), it's much less difficult toget the hang of than SFB is - and it's all shiny too.
Regarding the Old Kings, I'd imagine that it's possible that the Hur'q in the Paramount universe could well have been as benevolent to Qo'nos as the Old Kings were to Klinshai, but that the post-Hur'q Empire would be loath to admit to this in their history books!
Abbot, ADB are Amarillo Design Bureau, a company which has been developing a Trek-related (but not Trek per se) universe for over a quarter of a century! their site is at
www.starfleetgames.com
(they have an FAQ section which explains who and what they are, and why their universe is different to the one you'll see on TV)
Regarding the aforementioned supplements, they have supplements in both the GURPS and D20 game systems for their Prime Directive role-playing game.
In the GURPS system -
Or in the D20 system -
Hope that helps!

I also see that I have some reading to do. I am very interested in these "Old Kings". Plus I am always looking to know more about the various versions of our most glorious empire.

No. I have just about no interest in playing dice-mediated wargames or Roll-playing games where the story is ruled by the dice. My interest is in Role-playing, where ideas and stories are what matter with character progression a secondary concern and game mechanics, rules and dice are unfortunately somewhat necessary tools for driving the story and moderating the characters actions.
They still had the old PD1 RPG book on clearance, so I picked up a copy... I'll probably pick up one of the new Klingon Guides and out of curiousity the G1 PF deck plans unless the PD1 is largely disappointing. I'm hoping that they have done more to develop their unique alien species, the Lyrans, Hydrans and some of the Klingon subject races. My personal model is that Subject races are Kuve, and have no place on a starship's crew... But hearing more about what races might be subjugated and at least partially integrated into Klingon society should be very interesting(Especially since my Klingon Furry character is not born to a homeworld species and is also not kuve).
In looking at the covers, it looks like we are getting at least one apelike subject race, the Slidarians, and perhaps the dwarven Cromargs, the Dunkars, Hilladarians, and Zoolies. Maybe even the Vudar if we are lucky. From their description it sounds like the basic background material is the same and only the game mechanincs change.

This thread is one of many examples proving that I still have much to learn about the Klingon Empire, for this is the first I have heard of this rpg

The D20 and GURPS rules are new, but the Star Fleet universe has been around since the (late?) 70's, their first set of RPG rules making an appearance in the early 90's. This is not the Paramount canon universe. You will never ever see any Neotrek material. No Borg, Cardassians, Dominion, Ferengi, etc. If that is what you are looking for, you will be disappointed. This may not be the Klingon Empire you are used to seeing, there is a proper Emporer who is not a clone, there is no Chancellor or High Council.
This universe was established around the time of the first motion picture. The only canon races you will see are the Great Empires of TOS, the Feds, Klingons, Romulans, Gorn, Orion Pirates, and the Tholians. Also, and the Andromedans (who may or may not be the Kelvin from "By Any Other Name"), and if you are a fan of the The Animated Series(TAS), or a Larry Niven fan, Kzinti are present in this universe where they have been ruled non-canon and excluded from the Paramount Universe. Filling out the Starfleet Universe is another feline race, the Lyrans, who are the enemies of their Kzinti "brethren", the methane breathing Hydrans, the Interstellar Concordium the self-appointed galactic cops, and a few other minor races.
If you have seen the old Franz Josef Technical manual with the three-nacelled Dreadnoughts and single nacelled scouts, then the ships will be a bit more familiar to you than if you only saw Neotrek ships.
This may or may not be what you think of the Klingon Empire. But they have their own Star Trek licence, and it is irrevocable, but only covers the background universe found in the Original generation. I don't think they have rights to any of the characters portrayed in TOS, but within the limits of their license they seem to have free reign.

I own the D20 Klingons book and am proud to. It's a very comprehensive and believeable source book that I am currently using to write a series of novels about the General War. I'm so fascinated by how the Klingons recruit soldiers and starship crews from their subject races. There's so much for me to use for my work. In my opinion, the authors of this book really outdid themselves!
