Assorted Questions
«
on:

My oldest living ancestor died last night at about 22:58, November 24. We we were on our way to see her. She would have been 88 had she lived to December 5. She lived a long life and is no longer in pain. I wish that I had been able to spend more time with her. I don't mean to bring anyone down with this, I just wanted to say it somewhere.
That being said, my way to cope with grief is through study. Right now, that study is the Klingon language. So I'll ask some assorted questions that have been troubling me.
Does
DeSqIv
ever refer to an actual body part? Is there a word for a horn that grows on an animal? How would one express the concept of great grandparent? Would
qoqpu'
be an accurate description of Data and Lore (considering that both are robots and that both are capable of language)? I heard that the SkyBox cards expressed years in this manner:
wa'HutHutloS
(
1994
). Is that how one would express Earth years in the Warrior's Tongue?

DeSqIv
means
elbow
. It looks like literally
DeS qIv
arm's knee
.

Data once corrected someone who called him a robot, explaining that he was actually an
android
. I wouldn't use
qoq
to refer to him, though I'm not sure what word or phrase I
would
use right now.

The copyright year 1994 was rendered as
tera' DIS wa'-Hut-Hut-loS
. The numbers are separate, not run together. It comes out as "Earth year 1 9 9 4", seeming to be more of a simple label than an actual count of how many years have occurred.

I understand, but I was told that this word was used to refer to a pot handle, and it was implied that this was its only usage. That was why I bothered asking if it ever refers to a body part or if its usage is confined to cookware.

Wow, I actually remember that conversation! However, the definition of android is "a robot or synthetic organism designed to look and act like a human." I assumed that perhaps it was his preferred nomenclature ("I'm not 'Black', I'm 'African-American!'). Maybe
qoq
isn't the best word. Perhaps
qoqqoq
(so-called robot)? We're both lost on this one, it seems.

I see. But is this convention Okrandian canon, or should I use
tera' DIS wa'SaD Hutvatlh HutmaH loS
?

This comes from a series of Skybox trading cards for which Okrand provided the text, so, yes, it's canon.

That's what I figured. So now I can express specific years. Thanks!

I was told that
bang
only refers to a person. A friend of mine told me to look at
The Klingon Way
page 159 of an example of
bang
being used to refer to love as a concept. I'm skeptical, so could someone with this book let me know what the context of this sentence she suggested is?:
reH bang larghlu'.
Thanks.

I always took this to mean
The beloved one is smelled
. The image is almost like a predator smelling the prey; the image suffers, to me, if the "prey" isn't an actual person.

By the image as described, it could go either way to me. I'll tell her she will have to try harder, and her "Love is always smelled" is not good enough. The only context is an image? I figured there would an English translation. Thank you. I am in the process of ordering this and the other book. Then I won't need to ask "What's it say on *page number* of *book*?"

In The Klingon Way there is an explanation which is just (I don't have the copy with me right now) that smelling someone is the start of falling in love (with Terrans it is usually by seeing someone).
The problem is that the proverb is indeed "
Love is always smelled
" but
bang
really means
loved one
not the more abstract concept of love, which is contradictory to the English rendering of the Klingon proverb.
TKD translates
bang
as
love, loved one (noun)
, which is a bit inconclusive.
And KGT goes into detail about
bang pong
(lovers name) the name one uses when one is alone with his/her lover. This is one of the funnier parts of KGT.

Is
bang
strictly a romantic term? I had thought that
parmaq
and
parmaqqay
were the words that dealt specifically with romance and that
bang
was an all purpose term for a loved one (like a brother, daughter, husband, close friend; ex cetera). Now it seems that
bang
and
parmaqqay
are basically synonyms.

It is confusing, but judging from what KGT says
parmaqqay
stresses the emotional and passionate aspects of love.
To me
parmaqqay
sounds Spanish, just like
qaryoq'a'
carioca
