An honorless klingon is like a profitless ferengi!

Question says it all. I didn't want to do a poll because I didn't think I could come up with enough options.

Mine is how it shows advanced, sophisticated, peaceful races and civilizations (e.g. feddies and vulcans) and advanced races and civilizations who haven't become peaceful and moved beyond destroying eachother (e.g. klingons, romulans, dominion) and also advanced but still greedy races (e.g. ferengi). It shows all different types of races and civilizations, but all with different goals, problems and traditions. The funny thing is they all resemble humans....hmm...

I'd agree with both answers but also would add that it does so in a very entertaining way, with good solid stories.  The speical effects are quite good, but even when you watch the older episodes with ropey effects, the stories are good enough to hold your attention.

On a practical level, I like the way Trek gives me an opportunity to exercise my creativity... with role play, writing, costume making, charity fundraising, partying etc.

I also like how it's not all about killing and fighting, but also has discussions and makes the chars seem real.

So many options indeed.... That’s a tough one. I just put it to the house in general, and a call from the kitchen came back, “It gave us Leonard Nimoy!” To which I replied with a dirty look in the direction of the voice: “No, Dora and Max Nimoy gave us Leonard Nimoy.” But the voice does have a point. Trek did pick the multi-talented Nimoy out of bit-player nowhere, give us one of the most memorable characters of all time, and eventually allow him to bring his other talents to the forefront as well.

Plus, well, he’s a class act, lacks “teh tude” and sense of entitlement, and is generous with his time and his connections. There aren’t many like that in the entertainment industry.

Do not be afraid to post polls. They generate plenty of discussion when people complain about why their favorite was not listed and tell you all about it. It helps to generat the off-topic wandering discussions that give our boards their distinctive flavor. }}; )

I'm not afraid to post polls. I even posted one here: http://www.klingon.org/smboard/index.php/topic,1685.0.html I just didn't think a poll would be good for this, since I want in depth answers and not quick, short ones. Anyway thanks for all the interesting answers! I can't really say I'm a fan of Nimoy, Kesvirit, but that's just because I don't usually watch TOS anymore.

The one misses my point. There is much, much more to Nimoy than TOS Spock. Unlike certain other TOS-era celebrities  *coughshatnercoughroddenberrycough*, he is far from being a one-trick pony. It was Trek that brought him to the forefront but it was his range in artistic skills, charisma, generosity, and consideration of others that kept him in the limelight and allowed him to be known as something more than the token alien with the pointy ears. (“Like, I mean, he’s just that cool in so many different ways!”)

Around the Consulate, there is no controversy surrounding the new movie: everyone with whom I have discussed it expects it to be very, very formulaic and very, very bad, and no one plans to see it. I’ve been unable to find a volunteer to sacrifice their frontal lobes for two hours and report back to the rest of us if it is as bad and inconsequential as we all expect it to be.

Would you be willing to bend to duty and give us a paragraph review as to the quality of the film?

Addendum: the movie has its own thread here.

The "far out beyond what science says can be done" aspect. Guardian of Forever, Empath, Wink of an Eye sort of thing. All the usual stuff too, Kirk/Spock marriage, Scotty's lines, tunnels, weird aliens. Yer basic top level escapism.
