The first one:

tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh'a' {Do you speak Klingonese?}

HIja' {Yes!} pepIvqa'law' {Resume to appear to be healthy! (addressing more than one person)} [Very uncertain about this; his pronunciation is not what I'm used to]

The second one:

qajatlhvIp {I am afraid to speak to you} [again, VERY uncertain]

Then I believe he says HIja' ghobe' {Yes!  No!}, as if to say "True or false?"  The guy who's being held at gunpoint then answers HIja' {Yes!}

What is happening in this scene?  Are they both threatening to kill the guy in the white shirt, or is the foreign-looking man holding the white-clad man hostage and the Klingonist trying to save him?

The foreign looking man it theartening the other guy and the  one who asks him something is trying to save him and it was supposed to be are you wearnig a bulletproof vest (or something like it) because moments after the one who askes him shoots and he goes down but then he wakes up sayng yes, i am wearing a vest

Ah, that's interesting; it sounds like he's saying something something wep {jacket, coat}, but I couldn't figure out what that could have to do with anything.

Could he be saying QaD {to protect} something wepQaD'a' wep {The vest protects it?} seems like a long-shot, but I suppose it's possible...

Huh? Pronunciation is pretty much the measure of how well spoken something is!

The "translation" is trivial, as every line but one is taken directly from the Useful Klingon Expressions appendix of The Klingon Dictionary. The closed captions are exactly what TKD gives as the "rough pronunciation" of the phrases.

Hospital scene:
tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh'a'? Do you speak Klingon?
HIja'. bIpIvHa'law'. Yes. You look terrible (lit. you seem unhealthy).

Hostage scene:
ghaj yoD wep, HIja', ghobe'... The shield's jacket has, yes, no...
HIja'. Yes.

The wep jacket line is the odd one. It's likely that someone with a copy of TKD looked up the words for "jacket", "have", and "shield" but put them together in the wrong order -- ghaj yoD wep -- and the actor mispronounced the middle word as yaD toe. It should probably have been yoD ghaj'a' wep? Does the jacket have a shield?

I might have said yoDyIvbeH DatuQ'a' Do you wear a shield-tunic?

I've seen those episodes. Now I don't understand more than a few words of Klingon but just to add some context to those how have not watched "Chuck"....

 Chuck and Bryce use Klingon as their secret language.  When he meets Chuck again, for various reasons he's not saure if its the real Chuck so asks him in Klingon if he speaks Klingon... of course, its the real Chuck so he replies yes... the comment about looking terrible is because Bryce has just been taken out of what looks like cryogenic suspension and until then, they thought he was dead....

Bryce is basically asking Chuck if he has a protective vest on... yes or no... and Chuck says yes... at the time, we are not meant to understand the question so it has shock value when Bryce shoots him.

The Klingon Language Institute's web site http://www.kli.org/ is a good starting point. The site index on the home page has a link to the sounds of Klingon. You can also see how to join the tlhIngan-Hol email discussion forum, and get information on the upcoming qep'a' great meeting in Philadelphia next month.

See this page on speaking and pronunciation. Click on the red letters to hear the sounds spoken.

As for learning the language.... That is a long and difficult undertaking. I suggest you begin with a copy of The Klingon Dictionary and the Klingon Postal Course. I also recommend that you investigate the resources listed in this thread.

Wishing you Qapla'! (success!) in your quest,
