Hi there,

I wonder if anyone can tell me how to write
"Is Earth the aft or the armpit of the universe?"
Now I know this sounds silly, but I was making my own wordlist and found out that
'e' - that (previous topic) (pro)
'I' - armpit (n)
'o' - aft (n)
'u'- universe (n)
'a' is a Type 9 Suffix and indicates that the statement is a Yes or No question.
Ofcourse 'a' is also the augmentative suffix.
Now don't get me wrong, I am not trying to make fun of tlhIngan Hol, I want to have fun with it, funny poetry or something...
And I can imagine two Klingons joking in the presence of a tera'ngan just to annoy him saying stuff like this.
I was actually triggered by the word armpit because a few years ago I had an American co-worker here in Delft, Holland. And she complained about the city of Delft really being the armpit of Holland, meaning there is nothing to do here. I told here I didn't understand why anyone would move from California to Holland (well, maybe to Amsterdam) but then again I have never been in the US, so I might have the wrong idea about California anyway.

Don't worry... I have started playing with Hol with another (then) Hol enthusiast by adding the word yuch Chocolate to everything...
It is how yuch betleH 'obe', the Order of the chocolate bat'leth came to be...
And yes, I also picked words out of the list, looked up all the different vowels and tried making a sentence with that. It is a fun way to learn Hol with.

'u' 'I' tera'a'? would be my first guess...
Note however that "the armpit of..." might not be an expression the Klingons know.
Although...

I have a hard time placing the 'e'. I need to work on that, generally...

My attempt is:
'u' 'I' 'oH'a' tera''e' pagh 'o' 'u' 'oH'a'? (Is Earth the armpit of the universe or is it the aft of the universe?)

great Jon !!!

Who can come up with a better sentence with more glottal stops (') while still making some  Smiley sense ?

I guess I was looking for the 'oH part of the expression.

By the way, SoplaHtaHwI' , the expression "the armpit of .. " may make no sense to a Klingon but when this girl told me this it was new to me too. I understood immediately what she meant, and I guess any Klingon would as well.

majQa' Well done!

You did get 'o' 'u' aft's universe backwards -- it should of course be 'u' 'o' universe's aft -- but that's a small thing compared to the rest of the phrase.

What does either/or mean between two questions? Most people will understand what you intend, but we don't have good evidence that it works the same way in Klingon as it does in English. I might leave out the pagh and just make it two separate sentences.

Granted, we don't know. But can two questions not be seen as two sentences, and then be modeled after the "canon" taH pagh taHbe'?
Would we not make a question taH'a' "does he/she/it exist/endure" out of a statement taH "he/she/it exists/endures"?

Furthermore: would pagh not be a similar word as 'ach/'a "but"
In Hol they are considered "other" words, if I am not mistaken. Neither verb, nor noun.

I tried turning it into a nursery rhyme, I think I am more or less violating grammar using SoH, I tried keeping meter consistent, even with substitutions. Please point out errors as you see them. I am still in the early learning stage, and I figure using and abusing will get me experience alot faster than lurking.
