Thoughts and suggestions are invited regarding the correct color (with paint recommendations, if any) for a Klingon weapon -- say, a disruptor (of the Imperial era), or for that matter the hilt of a Daqtagh.  From photos, it looks like some shade of rusty red/orange is appropriate.

I had the same problem, My buddy who used to work for Paramount on Next Gen
said automotive paints! They would use a rust color primer for Klin Weapons
and Props. Use black & silver for distressing, and it looks just like
the real ones.

Found an answer on ASAP (A Site About Props) http://pub23.ezboard.com/bpropreplicas - cool site, by the way.

Klingon weapon props for ST5 and 6 were painted with Zynolyte Red Oxide primer, according to the guy who made 'em.  From TNG forward, the paint used was Krylon 1317 Ruddy Brown primer.  As KroH suggests, just about any red oxide automotive primer should look pretty good.
