For my linguistics class we are required to write a term paper about a
certain aspect of language.  Earlier that week I was in a discussion with a
friend about a roadtrip I am going to take across the US.  He told me about
a town in Cali that was supported by an Intel factory or something and a
lot of the techies were trekkies so they proclaimed the second language of
the town to be Klingon and they speak it on a regular basis.  As the
teacher spoke the thought popped into my head and thus i proclaimed that my
paper would be on the phenomenon of the Klingon language.  Any advice,
information, or resources are much appreciated.  I will check the forums
regularly but if you would like to send me something I can be reached at
jchrismaj@hawaii.edu

The first source for anyone seeking knowlege of the Klingon language is
The Klingon Dictionary by Marc Okrand. Since you've already signed
in I recommend that you read the various posts in at least the Language
section of these forums to get an idea of some of the aspects of the
language and issues around it.

What is the scope and specific topic of your paper, and what is your
deadline? Knowing those factors would help respondants decide what
resources to recommend first.

If you haven't already, it might also be worth your while to post your
above request at the Usenet newsgroup  alt.startrek.klingon . A lot of
language enthusiasts periodically check through there.

Your research should also include the Klingon Language Institute at www.kli.org.  You will gain great insights through their work.  You can reach the KLI Director, Lawrence M. Shoen, via e-mail through  lawrence at kli dot org  if you have specific questions.  He would be most pleased to assist you with your research as he has also written papers and articles for several magazines and newsletters that address the exact topic of your research paper.

Thanks for the replies Cheesy  I lost the address to the forums and thankfully I got a e-mail update about the forums.  I have until Mar. 19 to do a 5 page rough draft and then late april for the final paper.

I have free reign over the topic of the paper as long as it is related to the study of linguistics.
I think I am going to do the paper on the sub-culture of Klingon.

Although it has been 5 years and a bit since your paper was due, I would still be interested in knowing what came of it.

Did you get the laurels you were after?

*hoping that after all this time the e-mail notification still hits home...)

I'm pretty sure that the email notification is an opt-in arrangement and that was not available in the forums as they existed five years ago.  Plus the fact we don't have a valid email account for this user, unfortunately makes it pretty unlikely...  But if they get interested in Klingon fandom and happen to come back to the forums it would eb great to hear an update to this... If they even remember the paper!
