I did not know that there is a klingon language. I wish to learn to speak it. I already speak English (my native tongue), German(the language of my wife)fluently, Irish (the language of my forefathers)stumblingly and Dutch(the language of my paymasters)reasonably. I can also curse and swear in several other European languages and have never run away. My preferred weapon is a brickhammer. I train with it at least 40 hours per week.
Is there hope for me? jIHaghlaH
I found this site by typing “klingon conversation” into a search engine.

Welcome to the Klingon Imperial Forums and Grammar Academy!
(I joke. The latter is more the territory of the
KLI
.)
How did you first encounter the Klingon Language? Did you follow it to Trek, or discover it
through
Trek? What made you want to learn it? What are you planning to say with it? There really aren't all than many fluent Klingons to talk to. I do not mean to talk you out of it or discourage you in any way... But I wanted to become fluent myself when I first encountered the language, 12-15 years ago. Just be honest with yourself about the level of commitment you want to put in. There is a lot you can do with a language without putting for the effort to attain fluency. If you re serious
learning Klingon
has some learning strategies that might help.
I present this initial lesson because it involves chosing a name, the fondation of one’s Klingon persona.
jIm
I left off the apostrophe because it doesn't fit with how the letter is used. TKD (“The Klingon Dictionary”) states that the glottal stop is a consonant and always has to be next to a vowel. The only exceptions to this are consonant clusters
y'
and
w'
at the end of a syllable.
I would fail my duties if I did not ask you to review our
Forum Rules and Regs
. In short, a copy of TKD and knowledge of
thlIngan Hol
are not required for everyone who participates in these forums, so all Klingon Language in posts need to include an English translation. It doesn't matter if you put them right next to the words, as a translation guide at the bottom, or wherever you want to put it, but it must be part of the post. Unless of course you are posting to the
Klingon-Only Converstaion thread
or the
pIqaD test thread
.
In this case I'll provide your translations.
Sajatlh
I speak to you.

Hello Jim,
Welcome to the club.
Nice to see more people able to speak my native language (Dutch).
Klythe has explained enough.
Feel welcome and do not hesitate to ask about anything.

Hi Klythe,
Sorry about my lapse in etiquette re expressions in Klingon. My wish to learn Klingon is derived from a general interest in languages plus the unusual sound of Klingon(it sounds like the weigh in before a boxing contest). As you pointed out, klingon speakers are not thick on the ground so attaining fluency would be very difficult.
As regards choosing a Klingon name I would like to translate my own name into Klingon as it is a warriors name already(no credit to me..I had no choice in the matter lol). Not only that, I would guess that any klingon would be amused. I will need a little time to master the language sufficiently to do this. When I manage this you will be the first to know.

Well done!
Anyway, if your goal is to learn to speak Klingon fluently, you'll need other fluent speakers to practice with. There is a Klingon language MUSH (sort of a real-time chat thing, but with more "atmosphere") at
www.trimboli.net
, port 2218. though I don't frequent it myself. This forum is obviously a good source of knowledge, and there is also the Klingon_Language Yahoo Group.
However, I think the best resource in the known universe for learning Klingon is the email discussion forum hosted by the Klingon Language Institute. Check out
http://www.kli.org/
for information, and especially
http://www.kli.org/tlhIngan-Hol/
to see the forum's archives and subscribe to it.
If you are
truly
serious about your goal, consider attending the KLI's annual conference in Philadelphia this July. Details will be posted shortly.

Hi Qunchuy
thanks for the post and the links. Could you tell me how to find out where there are klingons speakers near to where I live? As regards Philadelphia I would love to but I live in Germany and the wife has already booked 2 weeks in Iceland for us this year.

thlIngan Hol enthusiasts are scattered all over the world, and few have the opportunity to meet with others of their kind. Until the KLI develops its own transport fleet,
very
few will be able to attend its annual meetings.
However. There is a {qepHom}, a meeting for those interested in speaking the tlhIngan Hol, being held in Saarbrücken Friday, November 14th through Sunday, November 16th 2008. Details can be found at
http://www.qephom.de/englisch.html
. ::mumbles:: G’daya* frames.... Once you reach the page, click on “sitemap”, then on “information about qepHom VII - 2008”, then on “what?”, etc. for details.
When it comes to looking for things and folk Klingon, you are fortunate to be in Germany, home of the
Khemorex Klinzhai
. Look through their
list of Klingon Fan Clubs and Groups
for organizations and contact information. Someone there should be able to point you in the direction of the organization and thlIngan speakers nearest to you.

qajatlhneS (I am honoured to speak to you)?
Thank you for the information. I have visited the "Khemorex Klinzhai" site and there are 2 members who live in the same city as me. I am nigh certain that I already know one of them(he disguises himself as a human in everyday life for some unknown reason)

As I am part of the Khemorex, and my ship's XO has been spotted here as well, you can always send me a message for more info.
I would love to introduce you to the Qetlop (
QI'lop
) in August, if you feel up to it (and I get to be there...)
