What do we consider ourselves? Are we trekkies, trekkers or klingonies or what?
What do you think?

I would say that we are Klingonies, which are a subspecies of Trekkers.

I have never some across the term “Klingonies” before. Klingon enthusiasts of all species usually refer to themselves as “Klinfolk”.

As for Trekkies v Trekkers... There is no way to win that particular battle. Ever since the schlockumentary “Trekkies” came out, I have refused to use that term. “Trekkers” sounds to my ears like a desperate attempt by Trekkies looking for some dignity and credibility. I avoid both by using the simple phrase “Star Trek fans”.

Klinfolk are not a subspecies, but one of many, many species of the genus Trek Fan. (You see, it all comes down to geographic isolation  of distinct populations and viability ratios of hybridization... What’s that? Nobody cares? }}: P)

Kesvirit,

You seem to have given this a lot of thought, a lot more than I did that is for sure.

I will go with what you said!  Thumbs up!

Not so much thought as observation. I do not know where the term originated; the earliest reference I find to “Klinfolk” is pre-July 27 2002 in KAG Mindscanner #64.

Aside from these boards, the only other mention of “Klingeek” I have encountered is in an undated document of K’Bob’s Church of the SubKlin, established by KAG co-founder John Halvorson.

I must emphasize that these uses are *NOT* the earliest known occurrances, but the earliest that I can find archived and link to. As with most slang and argot, their origins are lost in unknown conversations past. Does anyone recall hearing them used in meatspace before the times mentioned above? If so, tell us your stories.

I remember having a conversation with a person who claimed that she was not only a "Trekker" that being a mere "Trekkie" was an insult to her being. I then asked her what the "prime directive" was and the proper ratio for mixing matter and anti-matter...she destroyed the space/time continuem with her ratio.

In the mid-80s this was a "big argument", the alledged "Trekker" thought they were better because they "dealt with the deeper meaning of the show...its message" where a "Trekkie" was just a geek who "walked around in pointed ears with a phaser".

Me...I don't care. I proudly call my self a die-hard Trekkie...just like I'm a die-hard NASCAR fan (since '75) and a die-hard KISS freak.

I remember the trekkie/trekker debate when it was happening, but I did not (and really never have) given it much thought. I certainly did not know that there was a differing philosophy between the two!

Sounds a little like different religious sects…

I have always used the term Klin which may very well be a shortened form of Klinfolk, but may just be a shortened form of Klingon.

I almost exclusively hear Klingon fans refer to themselves collectively as "Klingons" and individually as "a Klingon".  It's what I use myself.  Certainly anyone in a Klingon uniform is a Klingon rather than a Klingon fan, where as someone in a Starfleet pyjamas is still merely a Trekkie or Trekker, rather than say a "Starfleet Officer".  I suppose if you have put in the effort to build or acquire a Klingon costume, ain't no one gunna dare say you ain't Klingon.  And if they do... We'll that's between them and the doctor that will have to put them back together.  Cheesy Klingon Grin

as a Human I call myself a Klingon fan/trekkie. In Kostume I call myself Klingon (fan).
