Is there any word weather or not Klingons will make an appearance in the upcoming film?

Not yet.

Paraborg’s official mouthpiece for all things Trek is startrek.com, and there is an official movie info/teaser site under construction at http://www.paramount.com/startrek/. At the movie site one may register for a mailing list for movie updates and developments. Read the fine print and take care that your email address is not sold to every spammer in the universe. There movie site also hosts movie-specific forums, though the signal to noise ratio is rather low.

Be skeptical of any information from third parties claiming to come from “anonymous sources,”  “set insiders,” and the like . A publicity method preferred by the studio appears to be to release/”leak” small details, stir them up, gage fan reaction and adjust their plans from there. Any Klingon characters mentioned now may have evaporated into the void by the time the film hits the screen.

Or, viewers could be pleasantly surprised to find their favorite canon Klingons fleshed out a bit. But I am not optimistic. If such material were to make a final cut, it would undoubtedly be retconned beyond recognition.

I have been to startrek.com and have seen the first trailer where the Enterprise is shown under construction. From the casting list the antagonists name is Nero, which is the name of a rather kooky emperor from Roman history but in this case possibly a Romulan?

If Nero is a Romulan I will be very disappointed, I really dislike it when the writers destroy original series cannon for current story ideas; it shows a real lack of respect for the original series and a true lack of originality from the writer(s).

At any rate, we know that Klingons were around causing problems for the Federation well before earth people found out what a Romulan looked like. The first look at Romulans by federation personal was in the original series episode #9 “Balance of Terror” It was also supposed to be the first use of a practical cloaking device by any race encountered by Starfleet up to that time, but the show Enterprise destroyed that little detail.

So Klingons seem like a better choice for antagonists than Romulans (assuming that Nero is in fact a Romulan character).

I guess we will just have to wait a bit longer for more details.

The Villains are indeed the Romulans, from what i've heard.

I look forward to it to be honest.

I don’t. Do we need another pathetic attempt at a “younger, sexier” Trek by older, greedier farts? Didn’t TIIC learn anything from “Enterprise”? I believe the series is ready for the {Heghba’}*. I’ll volunteer to be the intern who gives the blade the final twist. Just call it “StarFleet 90210” and be done with it.

In forwarding some news that hit my inbox today, Nero is indeed the Romulan villain, presuming the film is not edited again before the 8May release date. However, spoiler alert due to the image of him in the “mosaics” section of the commercial site I can understand the confusion. According to us.imdb.com and this thread (click on the “Show Spoiler!” button), there will be Klingons present in the form of two prison guards, though the only image of them I’ve found so far has them concealed in hoods and heavy coats. There could be tall paranthropoids under there for all we know.

I've renamed this thread to reflect that discussion was before the release of the new movie.   Post-release discussion has its own thread.
