How do you decide whether to use qan (old as in not young) or ngo' (old as in not new)?

In English, young seems to be reserved for the ages of living things, and new for inanimate objects. So does that mean qan is used for creatures and ngo' is used for other things?

3 Jem'Hadar battle cruisers? No problem. A tribble on the bridge? Call for backup and send your strongest warriors.
