Finnish MP seeks votes in Klingon
Reuters | Monday, 12 March 2007

HELSINKI: A Finnish member of parliament is aiming for re-election by campaigning with a translation of his website into Klingon, used in the TV series Star Trek.

"Some have thought it is blasphemy to mix politics and Klingon," said Jyrki Kasvi, an ardent Trekkie. "Others say it is good if politicians can laugh at themselves."

He said his politics posed some translation difficulties, since Klingon does not have words for matters such as tolerance, or for many colours, including green - the party under whose banner he is running in the national elections on March 18.

*grump* Not with that link, they can’t. Remember, Klinglings, that preview button is there for a reason. Use it to confirm that your url links hit their intended targets.

For those interested, in the candidate’s home page/blog (complete with {thlingan Hol} lead-in) he shares the credit of his success with the Klingon content:

Election results

Even if I originally did not intend this page to be an integral part of my re-election campaign, it became one. In spite of international attention, most of the traffic generated by the publicity was from Finland.

Having thousands of voters from my constituency visiting my web page just a week before election day must have had an impact. At least I did get almost twice as many votes as four years ago. And yes, I got re-elected. Thank you!

If one keeps reading, one will find scattered commentary in {thlingan Hol} amongst the Finnish.

Perhaps Klingons and Greens aren’t as incompatable as I had originally thought...

Update:  There’s an English version page with some comments on the page/campaign’s Klingonness and Trekkiness. Conservatives may want to skip this part -- it is largely Greenies agreeing with each other.

Gaffers make appreciative and supportive remarks in the form of bad imitations of primate calls from the direction of the lighting grids.

A finn I know has asked me to translate one of the banners of this person...
I found fault... It is a valiant attempt, but a faulty one. Alas.
