Welcome to the Forums, qarSuv! You are a student of behaviors, eh? It will be good to have another thought warrior on the boards to fuel debate!

Toward that end, please include English translations with anything written in thlIngan Hol. Others’ past failures to do so have hindered debate in favor of less welcome conflicts; hence translation requirements have been incorporated into the Forum Rules and Regs.

Savan <I salute you>

My names are Alexandra / qarSuv qemara and I live in Romania, Europe. I'm 26 and have just finished my college coursework in psychology. I became an ST fan in my teens and found myself attracted to the tlhIngan aspects thereof. After about five years of devouring anything tlhIngan and ST, I pretty much put SF aside and explored some career opportunities, settling on psychology - Transactional Analysis. One of the reasons I like Psychology is that I can use in real life many of the lessons I learned through SF and ST in particular. In fact, the more I progressed with my studies, the more I recognized issues approached in SF - ST. At the same time, I can take my work whereever and to whomever I want  Wink Right now I am training to become a certified transactional analyst, with a goal to practice as an independent therapist/coach/consultant.

I also have a (currently) small business, which is my actual source of income and financial hopes - and my board of komerex zha. I must say, my location and local dearth of fellows, supplies and support are motivational rocket fuel! If there are more than a dozen tlhInganpu' in Romania, they are mighty quiet, so if I want a taste of tlhIn, I have to find aspects I can integrate in real life. In psycholese, that's called sublimating.

I'm studying Ninjutsu and Tai Chi. I chose Ninjutsu because its flexibility offers both real-life usefulness and the possibility to adapt with relative ease to tlhIngan weapons in the future.

I like hiking, preferably in the mountains, rowing, shooting, meeting people, singing. I love living out my dreams. I'm a LOT more spontaneous in real person than in writing - for the galaxy's sake, I'm not Vulcan!

I speak fluent English and Romanian and I'm now learning tlhIngan Hol and German. I have taken years of German in school and didn't find the motivation to stick with it. Now, I'm using the tlhIngan "wave of attachment" to power the German project, as there are a lot of tlhIngan folks in Germany with whom I want to get in touch.

I want to get to know many of you through this site and definitely meet some of you in the middle future (one-two years).

How did I "thaw out of stasis"? Well... Back in January, I was looking to buy some boots and I saw THE most tlhIngan boots I didn't even dare dream of in my teens. "And it's all coming back to me now..." - with a vengeance!

They are really simple, black, with an over-the-knee flap extension which can be closed in the back with 3 straps with snaps on them. I can wear the flaps up or down, pirate-style. Personally, I prefer Klingon.

     Welcome qarSuv.

Those do sound like good boots to start with.  Very versatile.   I must admit my own Klingon uniform doesn't have boots yet, so far I've just been wearing black walking shoes.   But I've been thinking of getting a starter pair just like that, if I can find a good set, at a good price that fit, from someone who isn't going to fly by night...

As far as Klingon Martial Arts, I would love to get a bunch of Klingons together with a certified Martial Arts Instructor and go through the exercises in "The Secret Fighting Arts of the Warrior Race".  Video taping it if at all possible not to make an instruction video, since that would actually not be possible to actually publish or distribute such a video to the public(As the book we'd be working from had it's main production run canceled by the powers that be), still I think we could make a private recording for memories sake and perhaps share those memories with our friends.   It's a very fine line to walk though, as unfortunately copyright lawyers do not respond well to honor challenges to allow us to fight to decide what my and may not be done.  Cheesy Klingon Grin

Wow.  It does sound like you know how to have fun, life heard and play hard.   I'd love to meet you too.  Are you planning any trips to America?  Cheesy Klingon Grin

Yes, I do plan to come to the US in about a year from now, next qep'a' at the earliest. I've just finished college and gotten into the work force, so it depends on the money. If I'd had enough, I'd have gone to this year's  Cry. In the meantime, I'm plotting and scheming to go to Germany.

Where in the US do you live? What can you tell me about yourself, in real life and tlhIndom?

I don't have internet at home anymore, so my posts will be sporadic this following month. Still, I'm really looking forward to get to know about you, so just write and I'll check my messages and email qarSuv@yahoo.com at least once a week and reply.

I am a bit late in welcoming you to the fray, but still and all, be welcome. Come in and enjoy the battle that is our discussion and debating of all things Klingon.

Also, while doing a google search for another Klingon project I came across your Yahoo profile. I just wanted to thank you for listing my proverbs page among the "cool links" section.

No worries, I often lose track of threads I want to respond too.  Things go pretty slow, so the regulars have developed quite a bit of patience.  Cheesy Klingon Grin

Yeah, I understand how that goes.  International travel is very expensive.  I wanted to go to the Klingon Ball to meet Kehlan and her friends in the UK.  Either it's not enough money or not enough time...   Maybe we'll compromise and a few of us can meet up in Germany or England.  Though I think going to a qep'a' (Klingon language convention) would be a lot of fun.  I'm kind of ashamed though that I haven't been studying the Language much as far as memorizing vocabulary.    I don't do as well with memorizing things as learning ideas and such that connect to other ideas.  Though I'm squandering the opportunity to take advantage of the community here learn the language and actually use it to communicate so It sticks better.

I live near Seattle which is tucked in the northwest corner of the US.  I can talk about me, but this thread is about you.  My thread is a bit buried, so I made a link for you if you really want to talk about me. Cheesy Klingon Grin    I think we call it different things, but yeah, I've integrated Klingon thinking into some of my regular thinking, at least enough that I think I'd have a good idea what a Klingon would do in situation X or Y, but for the most part I don't act on that.  Except perhaps when I'm in a heated argument or debate.  There is such a thin line between argument and debate sometimes.

Weather in Romania - depends where you live. I'm in Bucharest, which is the capital and it's situated in the middle of a big plain. In the summer, it's totally incompatible with our style of clothing - I've seen over 100 degrees Fahrenheit last month. The seaside is also hottish. The higher areas are better and if I can get work in a city near the mountains, I'm out of Bucharest at hyperwarp. Not many hunting opportunities near Bucharest... However, the cultural life is rich here, there a re lots of museums and bands and a good opera house.

There is no fandom activity to speak of, at least that I know of. There's practically no LARP-ing in Romania and no clubs to speak of. That's tough and sad, but it also got me focused on what ST/SF and Klingon stuff I can actually use in real life. That's tough too, because I don't do near enough that I could. The silver lining is that, unless I show up in full armor, I can pretty much dress in a (summer-adapted) "civilian Klingon-ish" style as few peple remember ST and the clothing imports we get as a "cultural crossroads country", combined with traditionalist touches, cover just about anything in women's fashion. Ah, well, at least we have paintball Tongue

I'm in between scholar and fan, I just finished Psychology training in college, which gave me some interesting clues regarding the popularity of ST and the attraction to specific races seen among fans. My first glimpse of Psycholinguistics came from "The Final Reflection" and tlhIngan Hol. I'm now training in Transactional Analysis, which deals a lot with words and the "stories" we compose about ourselves, relationships and how we play the game of life as structures which grow. I like Klingons and their environments even visually - I think the lighting on their modern ships is just perfect - and their toughness, courage and honor code compensated some of the models I was taught as a girl and as one living under a dictatorship. The latter truly wreaked havoc in people's assertiveness and belief that they can improve their lives. THF also helped me take a step back from my own cultural matrix and take its' patterns with a grain of salt.

I visited Seattle in 1998 (got a scholarship to study in the US for a year) and loved it - it was a non-rainy day... That and Chicago were my favourite cities among the dozen or so I got to see. You're near some really strong Klingon groups, aren't you? Are you in contact with any of them?

When it comes to remembering words...
I also learn them better if I embed them in a structure - most people do. So I make sentences and translate - proverbs, songs, everyday conversations and I group them according to meaning - household items, architecture, weapons, clothing, body parts, questions and so on. Also, ever heard of submodalities (NLP stuff)? You can check, perhaps with a friend, if you remember better if you see a word, hear it or write it.

I went to this page: www.klingonska.org, which has all the saying in "The Warrior Way" transcribed into pIqaD, printed it and started learning how to read and write it. I also "uncover" the words and see if I can match them with their meanings. The proverbs are sometimes adapted, but there's also a pocket dictionary on klingonska, where you can look things up. And you have better access to the printed dictionary than me Wink

And, most importantly, how about getting study partners, both near you and on-line - I'm available, though still a beginner? Half of the fun with tlhIngan stuff rests with the community :p
